Team chat

Team channel, custom groups, and direct messages with teammates on your account — without leaving Trovepile.

When to use Chat vs task Team help

| Surface | Use when | |---------|----------| | Task → Team help | You are blocked, need help, or want comments on one task | | Team chat | You want to message the whole account, a subgroup, or one teammate; share an update; attach a note, bookmark, or task |

Chat appears in the main sidebar when your account has more than one teammate. Open Chat — you land on the Team channel by default.

If you are the only person on the account, use Invite a teammate on the chat page (or Settings → Team) to add someone.

Team channel

The Team row at the top of the chat sidebar is the account-wide channel. Everyone on the account can read and post there.

Use it for updates that should reach everyone. Messages show the author name so you can tell who posted.

Groups

Click New group in the chat sidebar (or New message → New group) to create a named group, pick an emoji icon, and choose members.

  • @mentions send a bell notification to the people you mention.
  • Check Notify everyone when you want the whole group to get a bell (optional; off by default).
  • Use Leave group in the group header menu when you no longer need the conversation.
  • Rename & members (group creator or account admin): open the ⋮ menu on a group to rename it, add/remove teammates, or delete the group.

Direct messages

Under Direct messages, pick a teammate for a private 1:1 thread. Click New message to search for someone or Invite a new teammate.

Open the ⋮ menu on a direct chat to Delete conversation. This removes the thread from your sidebar only — your teammate keeps the history. The chat returns if they message you again (or you send a new message from New message).

Search in conversation

While viewing a Team channel, group, or DM, click the search icon in the conversation header (or press ⌘⇧F / Ctrl+Shift+F) to search the current thread.

  • Matches message text, author email, and attached note/bookmark/task titles.
  • Search runs on the server across thread history (not only messages already loaded in the browser).
  • The conversation shows only matching messages while search is open.
  • Use ↑ / ↓ in the search box to move between matches.
  • Press Esc to close search.

Very long threads may return the first 50 matches after scanning recent history; refine your search if you see a “first matches only” note.

Notify team on save

When you create a task, bookmark, or note, you can check Notify team:

  • The post appears in the Team channel (same thread as manual team messages).
  • Teammates also get a bell notification.
  • Bulk bookmark saves within ~2 minutes are batched into one notification.

Your default (Always / Never / Ask) is in Settings → Integrations → Team chat.

Attach notes, bookmarks, or tasks

Click Attach in the message box (or type `/note`, `/bookmark`, or `/task`), then pick an item from your account. It appears as a card in your message so teammates can open it in the main Notes, Bookmarks, or Tasks library (not inside a browser tab session).

Extension

The browser extension passes Notify team on note and task creates. Open Chat on the web app (`/chat`) for the full team, group, and DM experience.

Slack / Discord (Team+)

Admins can configure a webhook under Settings → Integrations → Team chat to mirror Team channel posts (including notify-on-save) to an external channel. Custom groups stay in-app only.
